元旦は、金沢では珍しい温かく晴れた日だった。
恒例の我が家の茶会が始まろうとした時、今まで経験のしない大きな地震が起こった。
やがて、石川県全域での被害は甚大なものであることが徐々に判明していった。
比較にならないかもしれないが、我が家にも悲しい出来事となってしまった。
大樋美術館では、父が若い時に日展で特選受賞した大切な作品、私が日展で文部科学大臣賞受賞した作品、
長男・祐希の大作、全てが完璧な程に割れていた。
作品を収納していた部屋では、棚から落ちた茶盌や花入などの割れた破片だらけで、その数は100個を超えていると思う。
作品を失った心のダメージは大きい。
でも、有難いことに誰にも怪我はなかった。
明日からは、割れた作品の撤去作業をしなければならない。これも、天から与えられた試練なのかもしれません。

New Year’s Day was a rare warm and sunny day in Kanazawa.
Just as our annual tea ceremony was just to begin, an earthquake of a magnitude never experienced before struck.
Soon it gradually became clear that the damage throughout Ishikawa Prefecture was enormous.
It may not be comparable, but it was a sad happening for our family as well.
At the Ohi Museum, my father’s treasured work, which won a special prize at the Nitten when he was young,
my work, which won the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award at the Nitten,
and a large work by my oldest son, Yuki, were all cracked to a perfect degree.
In the room where the works were stored, there were broken pieces of tea bowls and vases that had fallen
from the shelves, and I think the number of broken pieces exceeded over 100.
The emotional damage caused by the loss of the works was great. But thankfully, no one was hurt.
Tomorrow, we will have to start removing the broken pieces of artwork.
This may be another trial given to us from heaven.
